What GSM actually measures
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of a single sheet of the paper if that sheet were cut to exactly one metre by one metre. Because it is normalised to area, GSM lets you compare a small visiting-card blank against a large poster sheet on equal terms — a 300 GSM card blank and a 300 GSM poster sheet are cut from stock of the same substance, even though one weighs a fraction of the other on the scale.
India, like most of the world outside the United States, quotes paper in GSM rather than in pounds per ream. That is a genuine advantage: the American system ties weight to a "basis size" that changes from grade to grade, so 80 lb text and 80 lb cover are nowhere near the same thickness. GSM has no such trap. A higher number always means more fibre per unit area.
Why GSM matters for the job you are printing
GSM is the single fastest way to describe how a printed piece will feel in the hand, and feel is most of the perceived quality of print. For everyday text printing, 70–90 GSM is standard copier and letterhead weight; it folds easily, feeds through office machines, and is cheap to post. Move to 100–130 GSM and you get the weight used for quality letterheads, brochure inner pages and flyers that need to survive being handed out. From 170 GSM upwards the sheet stops behaving like paper and starts behaving like light board: it holds its shape, resists curling and takes a heavier ink load without show-through.
Card stock sits at 250 GSM and above. Standard visiting cards in India are printed on 300 GSM, with premium cards on 350 or 400 GSM, often with a lamination on top. Below 250 GSM a visiting card feels flimsy the moment someone takes it, and that impression transfers straight to the business it represents. Bill books and invoice sets run the opposite way: they use lightweight 45–70 GSM sheets precisely because carbonless copies need pressure to transfer through several plies.
GSM also affects cost more than most buyers expect. Paper is bought by weight, so going from 250 GSM to 350 GSM on a card job increases the paper cost by roughly 40 percent even though nothing else about the job changes. Knowing the GSM of a sample you already like is therefore the cheapest way to specify a reprint accurately instead of paying for a heavier stock than you need.
GSM is not the same as thickness
This is the most common misunderstanding in print buying. GSM measures weight; thickness is measured separately in microns or in points (a "caliper" reading). Two sheets at the same GSM can differ noticeably in thickness because of how the paper was made. A bulky, uncoated art paper traps air between its fibres and feels substantially thicker than a dense, glossy coated sheet of identical GSM. Coating adds mineral weight without adding much bulk, which is exactly why a 170 GSM gloss brochure sheet can feel thinner than a 150 GSM uncoated one.
The practical consequence: if the physical thickness of your piece matters — because it has to fit a slot, a wallet, a sleeve or a folding machine — ask for the caliper in microns as well as the GSM. If only the hand feel and print quality matter, GSM plus the finish (uncoated, matt, gloss, textured) is enough to specify the job.
How to use this calculator accurately
Weigh at least 50 sheets, and preferably 100, on a scale accurate to 10 grams. Weighing a single sheet on a kitchen scale multiplies every rounding error by the sheet count. Measure the untrimmed sheet, not the finished piece, and measure it in the same unit you select above. If your result lands within 10 GSM of a standard value, you almost certainly have that standard stock — the small deviation comes from moisture content in the paper, which varies with humidity and can shift the reading by a few percent on its own.
